Athreos, God of Passage

What is the most obvious thing you can do with it?

Build ValueCreatureSacTown.dec? Slam Grave Pact effects (including the new one)? Bore everyone to death? Create the most oppressive board state ever? Um, I have no idea?

How does it compare to previous generals?

White/Black has been fairly hurting for General options (like most of the enemy colors), and this is definitely a solid, powerful, non-linear option (other than you clearly want to be playing it in a deck with a decent number of creatures.)  I really like this card (as does the rest of the world, judging from the preorder price.)

What is the most interesting thing you can do with it?

If ever you wanted to give in to the desire to build the giant cosmic “I dare you” that is the Shadowborn Apostle deck, allow me to introduce you to the new general.  Seriously, why would you run anything else? Going into white gives you access to additional Artifact and Enchantment tutors (value!), actual ways to interact with Artifacts and Enchantments (more value!), as well as the opportunity to make people read Immortal Servitude (blowout!). Throw in a few ways to make the team indestructible and/or Faith’s Reward, some Rotlungathrid ReNecromancimator, a couple Footbottom Feast/Gravepurge effects to restart the value train in response to Bojuka Bog, and a Thrumming Stone.  Add 40 or so Shadowborn Apostles, and a pile of rando Demons.  Boom! Decklist! Who said building EDH decks was difficult?

Pharika, God of Affliction

What is the most obvious thing you can do with it?

Misread the part where it gives the tokens it makes to other players, and then weep softly into your trade binder when you read it correctly.  Congratulations Wizards, you just successfully printed the General for EmoTribal.dec

How does it compare to previous generals?

Not well.  If you want to value things in your graveyard, Varolz says “hi!” If you want to RFG cards in other people’s yards, there are about a billion things that already do that and DON’T give them a random chump blocker that also just happens to kill whatever it’s blocking.  If you really want to build some rando Dredge thing, just suck it up and add blue and play The Mimeoplasm, OK?

What is the most interesting thing you can do with it?

I’ve been (sorta) pushing the (admittedly terrible) concept of GorgonsTribal ever since I tried to trick Cass into writing about it during a failed attempt at a Dear Azami article like 3 years ago.  Since then, the number of Gorgons available has seriously doubled (thanks, Theros block!), so maybe this is an opportunity to give that janky shit another go. Oh dang!

Aside from that, trade it to people who are not good at reading their cards.

Iroas, God of Victory

SUPER AGGRO GO GO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!RAWR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How does it compare to previous generals?

Um…it’s super aggro go go go? Rawr?

What is the most interesting thing you can do with it?

Ummmmmmmm…SUPER AGGRO GO GO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!RAWR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keranos, God of Storms

What is the most obvious thing you can do with it?

Put it at the helm of a giant obvious pile of GoodStuff cards and Top effects?  Sure, it can’t go infinite because of that whole “first card drawn” thing, but what if you took infinite turns? Ha! OK, InfiniteTurns/IzzetGoodstuff.dec is a go!

How does it compare to previous generals?

Is this guy a better General for InfiniteTurns/IzzetGoodstuff.dec than Melek? Probably not, as that deck already exists.  For those of us interested in doing non-infinite combo things, Keranos is possibly a better option than either iteration of  Niv-Mizzet, as he is cheaper, less likely to get blown up for no real reason, and isn’t (yet) attached to some boring combo that you will get treated like you’re playing even if you’re not.  Also, let’s just go ahead and pretend that Jhoira doesn’t exist when we are making comparative lists of Blue/Red Generals, OK?

What is the most interesting thing you can do with it?

Theoretically, this guy could be the new General of the “Izzet?” deck (my annoying blue/red thing that runs every Misdirection effect ever printed, along with a handful of Morph creatures, and a variety of other crap that allows me to say “I dunno, Izzet?” 30 to 40 times per game.  If I were you, I’d hate me too.)  The big downside of playing this dude as the General of anything that wants to play gotcha! effects on people is that revealing your cards a lot is a bad strategy when you are trying to surprise people.  So, with that in mind, here’s a deck building challenge: build a deck around this guy that has no way to deal damage other than his Lightning Bolt ability.  This means you have to run less than 5 total Chroma in the deck, so that he will never be a dude.  Also, you can’t run any damage based removal, which pretty much limits you to Fissure and some weird card like Pongify and Polymorph.  Seriously, build this! Who says Lightning Bolt is bad in EDH?

Kruphix, God of Horizons

What is the most obvious thing you can do with it?

Build some sort of weird personal challenge deck where your goal is to take the longest turn ever without actually doing anything, and then take a longer turn the next turn (or, I suppose, if you also have Prophet out, during each other player’s end step.)  If you do decide to build this, you might want to consider wearing a cup to the game store.

How does it compare to previous generals?

Is it weird that the Prophet of this dude is arguably more busted than the god itself? Also, it’s Green/Blue.  Hit me up when they print a Green/Blue General that doesn’t seem immediately broken and/or purely GoodStuffy.

What is the most interesting thing you can do with it?

I won’t lie, I can even come up with silly ideas for this without suggesting something that someone else has already just suggested for real. What, you want me to make Helix Pinnacle jokes? Go look at the price of that thing and stop laughing.

King Macar, the Gold-Cursed

What is the most obvious thing you can do with it?

Probably something involving Springleaf Drum.  Also, OMG broken combo with Koskun Falls, yo!  Here, I’ll go wait while you look that up.  Enchant World, baby! Homelands, baby! Quick, buy them shits out so that it can spike to like $10 because that’s how things work now!

How does it compare to previous generals?

Unlike every other General in this set, King Man has a LOT of competition in his color.  Let’s just say that he won’t make anyone forget about Kuro, Pitlord (or whatever.)

What is the most interesting thing you can do with it?

There’s probably a “Gold!” Theme deck somewhere out there that is just waiting to be made, right? I mean, look at the reprint art on Greed.  Perhaps you were looking for an excuse to build another crappy mono-black theme deck? I hear Vish-Kal or Oloro “Dudes in Chairs Tribal” is delightful this time of year! There are so many bad things to do with this dude!

 .     .     .     .     .

Ok then!  See y’all in three months for a  3 word breakdown of the Generals in M15! You’re the best!
