Welcome to Commander Comments,  where we pay homage to Aaron Forsythe’s Random Card of the Day.  Since I can’t talk about R&D, here’s the deal:  I click “random” on the Gatherer and talk about the potential uses in our beloved format. Time to move away from the staples and get some creative juices flowing. Ready?

Today’s card is Lonely Sandbar. The cycling lands used to be much more popular in the format, and then they dropped off; now, with Amonkhet providing more benefits to cycling, they are coming back a bit.

I definitely like the Onslaught versions because they cycle for cheap…I love cheap effects. But honestly, I’ve got mixed feelings about them. I recently built Meloku the Clouded Mirror and I am loving the cycle lands there. My Gitrog Frog also had a few cycle lands to abuse Life from the Loam; that is where most cycle lands point – turning into an engine with LftL.

Honestly, I think the blue cycing lands are the worst in Commander. Blue decks want untapped mana for tricks and can run true draw spells. But other colors can profit from an early tapped land or turning the cycling land into a ʺrealʺ spell in the late game.
