Hey there.  Long time no see.  How are things?

It’s been a while since we’ve updated GDC; the last real post was in October.  Quite a bit has happened since then on all fronts, and I’d like to think that things are in a better place all around for all of us.  Sometimes, you just need to get back to the core, and strip away the rest in order to remember who you are and what you want to show the world.

So we did just that.  I promised we’d be back once the smoke cleared, and here we are.  I hope we can pick it right back up where we left off…or preferably, take it higher.

There are a few changes that we’ve made; some you can see, and others are less visible but more important.  Right off, the site got a little bit of a freshening up.  This isn’t what we’ve been working on behind the scenes – more of a “GDC 2.5” rather than a true “GDC 3.0” – but I wanted it to be clear that we’re back in all ways, and a new look really nails the point home.  Eventually, we’ll get this to a place we’re all comfortable with, but for now, this will do – the “ninja slash” design as Dave calls it, Krark’s Thumb, and all.

Past that, the co-captains put their heads together to come up with a better game plan overall.  The goal with our current team is solid content three times a week – Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  This is tough sometimes, because of things like “work” and “family” and “real-life commitments”.  It is what it is.

To get on a better track, Dave and I diversified our roles.  Other than Founding Father, I’m now CEO (Chief Editing Officer), while Dave is going to focus on his new role as MC (Master of Content.  Zing!)  Dave gets to run the schedule and wrangle the team, and I get to make the words look pretty.  Let’s see how things go.

Speaking of, the gang’s all here.  Look for the whole crew to get back in gear – Sean, Erik, James, Jon, CK, Alex, Kaka, Mr. P, and Imshan have all been joining in on some pretty strong team chats (Slack is a hell of an app, by the way.), and everyone is spitting out ideas and filling the pipeline.  On a personal note, I’m stoked that everyone was down to hang on while I dealt with some personal issues that took my full focus for the last few months, and I’m really excited, grateful and honored that everyone still believes in the site as much as I do.  This is going to be fun – there are some really cool articles ready to fly.

So…where are we going from here?  Who knows.  At one point, I might have been really excited to lay out a roadmap and plot course for weeks, months, and further as far as the site goes.  If I’ve learned anything recently, though, it’s that it never pays to lose sight of your surroundings because you’re focusing on what’s coming up next.  For now, that’s where I’ll leave it – we’re here, we’re back, and we’re going to do our damnedest to bring you all killer EDH content every week.

For those of you coming back – welcome home.  We’re glad you’re here.  For the new faces just finding us now, come on in.  And thanks to you all – it means the world to me.

I don’t want to leave you without actual EDH content today, and lest you think I’ve lost my edge, I’ll end with a return to “Quick Hits” – Grumpy Old Man™ style.  Don’t worry – I’m still as angry as ever about nothing in particular of any real importance.  Enjoy the ride.

-Commander 2015.  The “Experience Counter” debacle.  I’m sure that tons of you out there have been enjoying running all the new goodies WotC gave us this year.  Personally, I was (slightly) disappointed that I didn’t get a better open-ended Boros general to help me get out from under my unbelievably-stupid RW building block, and (as time has told) I am also (very) sick to death of the Experience mechanic.

I brewed up Meren of Clan Nel Toth.  I played the deck once.  The table scooped when I started recurring Kokusho, the Evening Star multiple times a turn.  I’ve watched Ezuri 2.0 crap out +11/+11 counters on turn six, and heard tell of epic email-on-iPhone checks and trades going down at the table while the Mizzix of the Izmagnus player goldfishes his way through a ten-minute turn.  Exciting, right?

It’s not a bad idea.  You know I love to complain about shiny new things, but this feels justified.  For stronger metagames, I’m sure this is just fine, but it feels like the Experience mechanic is just a little too strong for what I would envision as the target demographic.

What are you seeing?  Am I totally wrong on this?  I’d love to hear more stories.

-Oath of the Gatewatch.  I preordered everything I wanted from the set for $7.65.  When do the spoilers for Shadows over Innistrad hit, again?

-And I didn’t like Innistrad block the first time through.  At least I’ve got the Core Set to keep me warm until…wait, what’s that now?

-The Annual Purge (not to be confused with this Purge , which I enjoyed when it was on Starz last week and I was deep into my third Sailor Jerry and Diet Coke) has begun.  The victims:

Memnarch.  Congrats…you hit the gym, started throwing things instead of stealing them, and now you’re Bosh, Iron Golem.

Vorosh, the Hunter.  Hey, I played you once.  Cool.  Because I’m a huge hypocrite, you’re now Ezuri, Claw of Progress.  I’d like to think that I’m doing this to prove the whole “Experience Counters suck” point home.  (Besides – I learned from the best.)

Titania, Protector of Argoth.  Totally sick to death of playing “Lands Matter”.  So you’re now…Omnath, Locus of Rage.  Heh.

Sekki, Seasons’ Guide.  Project GenCon 2015 was a blast to play, but sadly, fell victim to Vorosh’s need for counter generation (and that ended so well…)  Plus…

Mogis, God of Slaughter needed to become Kresh the Bloodbraided for the seventh time, so something big and green needed to go.

Riku of Two Reflections hung on for a whole game…one that featured me sitting there for thirty minutes without playing a single spell, and then winning the game by kicking Rite of Replication on someone’s Massacre Wurm.  Yup.  I still can’t wrap my head around non-GoodStuff Temur.

Grand Arbiter Augustin IV and Wydwen, the Biting Gale (which was itself briefly in, Corpse-Born">Grimgrin, Corpse-Born) joined forces to become Sen Triplets as soon as the most recent Rules Update made that card good finally.

And finally, Gisela, Blade of Goldnight (which I never actually built because, again, I completely suck at R/W) was tossed out in favor of Tariel, Reckoner of Souls, because Mogis wasn’t enough of a metagame hate deck, and I still desperately need to live the “You’re attacking with Blightsteel Colossus?  Cool…Reflect Damage?” dream.

It’s coming.  Believe me.

Angus Mackenzie Enchantress, Mishra, Artificer Prodigy Awesomeness, Gaddock Teeg Fun Police, and Meren of Clan Nel Toth Reanimator – congrats.  You survived for another year.  (Well, probably not Meren, because Experience Counters.)

-Goddammit, people.  Play board sweepers.  Ask Mr. P about “The Worst Game of EDH Ever”.  It’s a great story.

Okay…that’s enough for now.  Thanks again, everyone.  Welcome back.
