Wow, y’all people are dynamite!

First off, thanks so much to everyone who contributed ideas in response to my article complaining about how I couldn’t make a mono blue thing. The suggestions y’all came up with were great, and they definitely got me moving in a direction I like.

Based on my first pass through the suggestions, the two things that popped out at me were Talrand and Taniwah. Talrand seemed interesting (if slightly archetypal) and Taniwah seemed janky and insane (just like me!)

So here’s the thing…I sat down Friday night, and began pulling out cards to make Taniwah Insaneo-Landfall.dec, and then I realized that I was unsure how Taniwah interacted with lands that come into play tapped (or more specifically, I needed to remind myself exactly how the Hell phasing works), because I was trying to understand the interaction between Taniwah and Thawing Glaciers (which seems marginally OK, which is about what I was shooting for with this deck). And in reading the Phasing rules, I realized that Phasing is not considered a zone-change event, so it does not trigger comes into play or leaves play effects, which seems good to know.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sadly, without the ability to leverage 7-10 landfall triggers every other turn (which was going to elevate this deck from “unplayable crap” to “unplayable novelty crap”), I made an executive decision to scrap the thing. Sorry to anyone who suggested that, but at least you can take solace in the knowledge that your idea just doesn’t work.

So anyways, I decided to throw together a Talrand thing based on the idea of running a bunch of cantrips, which is not exactly original but is new territory for me, as I tend to build EDH decks that start their curve at about seven. Here’s what I threw together in preparation for EDH night at Mr. P’s on Saturday:

My initial impressions of this thing are that it leans heavily on the general and suffers from lack of removal (or any answers, really.) Time to find out! While I test tonight, y’all should hit me up and let me know what I’m doing wrong. I’ll be back on Thursday (or possibly next Monday) with updates on my testing.

XO,
->Mr. P
