Commander 2014 – First Impressions (Release Events, and Going Big Green)

Commander 2014. *sigh*

I hate to let down fans of my regular and incessant complaints, but I’m pretty universally excited about this set.

(I know, I know…I’m Googling “Hell Freezes Over” as we speak to try to find a weather report.)

Here’s the thing – Wizards of the Coast really did it right this year. Commander 2014 has hit in a way that is very much unlike the two previous releases. Let’s take a look:

The Road To GenCon ’15 – Fuel For The (Meta) Hate Game

GenCon 2015. The Best Four Days In Gaming. July 30th through August 2nd, 2015. Nine-and-a-half months away. Event badges won’t go on sale for another three months.

But I’ve already booked a house in downtown Indianapolis for that week. GDC has a house for GenCon 2015…already. I’m nothing if not completely ridiculous.

I’ll be getting into EDH content below, but first, an aside –

Grumpy Old Man – The September 2014 Banned List Update (Alternate Title: Rofellos, Don’t Let The Doorknob Hit You…)

What a wonderful day! Unless you’re a Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary fan, anyway…

Things I Think During Flash Floods…

What a crazy past week. Literally everything has conspired to wreck my ability to publish, from work to family to Mother Nature herself.  The latter is responsible for two full nights – last night included – with no power, and at least two major roads in this area washing clean out. It’s damn-near biblical in these parts, if that’s your thing.

Anyway, there are a lot of things on my mind that I’ve been dying to talk about, and the power is back on, so I’ll do just that with no further ado…

Grumpy Old Man – Magic Economics, Playing Vintage Online, Consipracy, and Why I Hate SolForge

Welcome back, everyone. I’m on four hours of sleep, and the A/C is out in my office. I feel like some good old-fashioned complaining today. Fasten your seatbelts…

Dissecting “A Unified Theory Of Commander”

An article on Commander entitled “A Unified Theory of Commander” hit the interwebs over at Brainstorm Brewery this week, and it seems to have struck a chord with the community. I wanted to take some time to weigh in with my thoughts here; I think the author, Jason, came with a solid angle, but might have lost sight of the forest for the trees in the process.

Grumpy Old Man – Prerelease Lamentations

(Editor’s Note-

Grumpy Old Man is a new column that Cass will be breaking out from time to time to…well, complain about things.  It should not in any way be mistaken with the regular content Cass provides when he…well, complains about things.

But hey…the man has roots to go back to once in a while.)

I didn’t go to the Journey Into Nyx Prerelease this past weekend.  What’s worse, I didn’t particularly care that I missed it.  I checked Twitter all of once all weekend, and just went on with my business – cleaning the house and riding bikes with my son and grocery shopping and sleeping in my armchair in front of the television.

The Best-Kept Secret Ever

I bought a minivan this weekend.  This is a huge problem, and I’ll explain why.

I guess I actually bought it for my wife.  She drives the kids around more than I do.  But it is in my name, so technically I own a minivan.

(Bear with me here.  EDH content is on the way.  I promise.)

Desert Island Deck Construction, Part 3: What’s In A Deck?

I was looking back at the list of Magic expansions, and realized that I started playing EDH somewhere in between Planar Chaos and Shards of Alara.  (I know this based on my first two general choices of Intet, the Dreamer and  Sharuum the Hegemon.)  That means that I’ve been slinging 100-card decks for somewhere between five-and-a-half to seven years.  Time really files.

Lessons From Last Wednesday Night (Alternate Title: Xenagos Good! Glass Cannon Deck Bad!)

It’s been a long time since I’ve simply sat down and written a little about some recent games, so today you all get to suffer through enjoy some of my thoughts on a few outstanding deck-building theories I’ve been kicking around.  Also, there’s some bonus coverage regarding a pretty seriously epic play that occurred at the end of the night in a game of EDH Emperor, so hopefully there’s something for everyone today.
